Old Laptops, Bright Futures

Tháng 7, 2025

1. Background & Motivation

In today’s digital era, having access to a personal computer is essential for both learning and work. However, for many underprivileged students, owning a laptop remains a distant dream. Recognizing the untapped potential of used computers, SonTa Foundation partnered with the “Old Laptops, Bright Futures” initiative originally launched by the Youth Union of the University of Information Technology (Vietnam National University, HCMC) to bring technology access to students in need across Vietnam.

This project not only promotes resource reuse and reduces waste but also contributes to bridging the digital divide in education and creating a positive social impact.

2. Project Overview & Implementation

Implementation Process:

  • Mobilization phase: Over two months, SonTa Foundation called on the community to donate used laptops via media channels and volunteer networks.

  • Repair & refurbishment: Volunteers from “Old Laptops, Bright Futures” inspected and restored the donated devices to ensure reliable functionality.

  • Distribution: SonTa Foundation supported repair and shipping costs, and selected recipients based on their financial needs and educational context.

Key Results:

  • 20 laptops were donated by the community

    • 15 laptops successfully refurbished and fully operational

      • 13 laptops delivered to students in SonTa Foundation’s classes nationwide

      • 2 laptops sent to EVG Community Library in Tra Vinh to support local learners

3. Partners

  • Old Laptops, Bright Futures Initiative: Responsible for technical inspection and repair

  • Youth Union of the University of Information Technology (VNU-HCMC): Program implementation support

  • Individual and organizational donors: Contributed used laptops and funding for repairs

4. Impact & Achievements

  • Community connection: Linked donors with underprivileged students across Vietnam

  • Waste reduction: Gave new life to used technology that might otherwise be discarded

  • Educational empowerment: Enabled 15 students and a local library to access digital learning tools, enhancing educational outcomes

5. Post-Project Updates

SonTa Foundation sincerely thanks all donors and partners from the Old Laptops, Bright Futures initiative for their valuable contributions. We are committed to continuing similar projects in the future and look forward to your continued support.

Together, we can bring lasting value to communities and empower every child with the tools they need to learn, grow, and dream.
