Today, 18th December, is International Migrants Day. SONTA Foundation takes this occasion to remind us that there are still many marginalized migrants in the world. Among the estimated 272 million migrants, a lot of people have faced discrimination, exploitation, and suppression in destination countries without any helps from their hometowns. The role of migrant labor in economic development is irresistible, however, because of their disadvantaged position, they often suffer from injustices whenever crises and incidents happen.
We hope that one day, all of us will celebrate this day to pay tribute to the contribution of migrants rather than to act aggressively to call for the recognition of the rights of migrants. As the message of the International Organisation of Migrants stated, “we learn together, create together, work together, sing, dance and play together. We live together.”, there is no excuse to discriminate against our fellows.
